“Where flowers bloom, so does hope.”

The squash blossom design is inspired by the flower of the squash plant, which holds agricultural importance for many Indigenous peoples in the Southwest. The flower symbolizes abundance and fertility, reflecting the deep connection between Native Americans and their environment. During the twentieth century, the squash blossom gained popularity beyond the Native American communities. Today, the blossom continues to be crafted with contemporary influence and still infused with cultural significance and personal artistry. In this 2-day workshop with Danny Wade, learners will learn to hand-craft squash blossoms. Techniques include, but not limited to, cutting & forming, bead making, stamping, texturing & soldering. “Where there is ruin, there is hope for a treasure.”

The art of ruin and wabi-sabi are deeply intertwined concepts that celebrate imperfection, transience, and the beauty of decay. Wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic philosophy, finds beauty in the natural cycle of growth and decline, emphasizing simplicity, asymmetry, and the fleeting nature of life. It encourages an appreciation for the imperfect and the incomplete, which resonates with the themes present in the art of ruin.

In ruin art, the remnants of structures or objects tell stories of their past, emphasizing how nature and time can reclaim what was once human-made. This invites us to find beauty in the scars of history and experience. This aligns seamlessly with wabi-sabi’s values, as both encourage mindfulness toward the natural world and an acceptance of life’s impermanence.

After Helene, Sherri found broken china remnants on the banks of the French Broad River in Asheville. In this workshop, participants will use these china remnants to create a narrative pendant. This class will challenge conventional aesthetics by celebrating imperfection, urging students to embrace change and find beauty in the fleeting nature of existence. Lessons will include, but not limited to, prong setting and design. Creating wabi-sabi art allows for expression of emotions related to loss, change or acceptance. This can be a cathartic process, helping individual’s process grief and move toward healing.
